Being an Eco Tourism activity, Turtle Watching is an interested among many tourists. Sri Lanka is a hotspot for the Turtle Watching where a total of 5 marine turtle species out of 8 in the world visit the Sri Lankan sandy beaches for nesting.
The best locations for watch turtles visiting the beaches are Rekawa and Kosgoda in the southern and western coasts respectively and Kalpitiya on the north western coast of the country. The most popular is Rekawa which is a village located close Tangalle approximately 207 km from Colombo.
With illegal collection of Turtle Eggs and hunting turtles for flesh for their shells, the turtles became threatened species. A project called Turtle Conservation Project was established in 1996 for the purpose of protecting sea turtles in their natural habitat. The Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) in their ‘Turtle Watch’ programme on the Rekawa beach where visitors can observe the ancient ritual of turtles coming ashore and laying eggs without harresting them.
