With the Maldives only a hop, skip and jump away, it is often forgotten that Sri Lanka itself is a paradise for scuba-divers and snorkelers alike. Magnificently colourful coral reefs and fascinating ship wrecks scattered in the surrounding coasts of the island offers a perfect location for diving. The swallow waters around the country and specially Hikkaduwa Marine Sanctuary makes great opportunities for the snorkelers. The “Bar Reef” (Sri Lanka’s largest reef) in the north western coast offers an impressive reef for the scuba divers while the “Pigen Isand” off Nilaveli (north of Trincomalee) where the turquoise-coloured waters and abundant fish and coral life make it the ultimate underwater experience.
Being one of the important ports in the Indian Ocean, a lot of ships were crossing the Sri Lankan terrain during the world wars. As a result of the bombings and attacks to the ships, there are number of ship wrecks in the waters around the island. So it makes the island a paradise for those who interested in exploring the Ship Wrecks too.
