Kithulgala

Kithulgala is a small town situated in the south west of the Hill Capital Kandy and north to the fascinating Holy Mountain, Adam’s Peak. Located approximately 95 km from the Colombo on Avissawella – Nuwara Eliya A-7 road, Kithulgala provides the destination for excursions from the Capital City. The village is famous for “Kithul Juggery” & “Kithul Honey” which made by the extracts from Kithul or Fish Tail Palm (Caryota uren ) tree.  David Lean's (1957) Academy award winner "Bridge on the River Kwai" was filmed along the Kelani River near Kithulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge (and, supposedly, the submerged train cars that plunged into the river in the climactic scene).

The Kelani River, one of the four major rivers in Sri Lanka flow through this small village making the settings for the thrilling adventure “White Water Rafting”. The stretch of the River Kelani around the village, the "Kithulgala rapids" range from Grade 2 to 4. The names of the rapids are no less seductive to that of the waters: Virgin's breast, Butter Crunch, Killer's Fall, White quarter, Head Chopper, Rafter's quarter. Waters having washed away your sins, you get cured of all your fears by the end of a 7 km stretch of the river wild. The River is wide at Kithulgala, but it is shallow apart from a deep channel near the opposite bank, so in the drier months it provides a safe and attractive place to swim, wash and play.

Also Kithulgala is famous among the birders. The Kithulgala Rainforest has most of the rainforest bird species that are found at the World Biosphere Reserve at Sinharaja, although in lower numbers. However, the secondary forest and cultivation at Kithulgala is more open than the pristine woodlands of Sinharaja, and elusive endemic species like Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Green-billed Coucal and Spot-winged Thrush may be easier to see.

Beli lena Cave, one of the pre historic caves in Sri Lanka is located 8km from the town of Kitulgala. It holds evidence of a lost generation of Sri Lanka 12,000 years old; then this cave belonged to the Balangoda People (Homo sapiens Balangodensis by Paul E. P. Deraniyagala) who found here ten skeletons of these people, who lived 2000 feet above the sea level. The fossils are believed to be more than 32,000 years old.

Our Camping site is located on the bank of the Kelani River where the usual rafting trip starts which is the ideal place for all of these activities.
