Dambana (Lokgalara)

The "Veddah People", the indigenous people of Sri Lanka live in a fascinating remote jungle village located 300km away from the Colombo is known as Dambana. Human remains in Sri Lanka dating from as early as 18,000 BC show a genetic continuum with present-day Veddas. According to the ancient chronicle of Sinhalese royalty, the Mahavansa, the Pulindas (Veddhas) are descended from Prince Vijaya (6th - 5th century BC), the founding father of the Sinhalese nation, through Kuveni, a woman of the "Yakkha" clan whom he had espoused.

Our campsite in Dambana is located just 7 km away from the Veddah village close to the Lokgal oya. Being located close to the Lokgal oya, canoeing / Kayaking will be popular activities in the campsite which an ideal place for bird watching too. If you are lucky you will be able to spot crocodiles in the lake as well. A cycling/ trekking trail will bring you to Dambana Veddah Village where you can watch, observe their homes, living styles, cultivations etc… where they will exhibit some traditional ways of hunting, gathering honey etc…At the end of the day a team of veddahs will visit your campsite and perform their traditional Dance "Kiri Koraha" to entertain you.

Another activity in Lokgal Ara is camping in the islands of Lokgal Oya. There are few islands for will put up the campsite where you will have the exclusivity of undisturbed quitted.
