Arugam Bay, a small fishing village in the eastern coast of the island approximately 320 km away from Colombo and 3 km from Pottuvil. The wide, sweeping sandy beach in front of the village is an attraction for swimming all year-round.
Being regarded as one of the 10 best destinations in the world for surfing, there are three main point breaks namely "The Point", Potuvil Point and Crocodile Rock. The best time to visit Arugam Bay is from May to October while the best season for surfing is May to September.
Being located on the edge of the Yala East National Park, you will be able to spot some wildlife in and around Arugam Bay. The Pottuvil lagoon is a haven for numerous bird species and a home to a wide variety of wildlife including crocodiles, monkeys & water snakes. A walk to Elephant Rock, about 3km south of Arugam Bay provides an appreciation of the extent of the beautiful beaches. In the early morning or evening we will have the opportunity to sight elephants roaming nearby.
Other important attractions around Arugam Bay are Lahugala National Park which is 16km inland to Potuvil and Magul Mahavihara, 8 km west of Potuvil. Panama, the last Sinhalese village before the Yala East National Park is 12 km away and beyond another 16 km is Okanda which is an important staging point on the overland Pada Yatra pilgrimage, the long walk to Kataragama for 15-day festival in July.
Our Campsite in Arugam Bay is located in a beach front land with a main road in between. The surfing points are within few minutes’ drive. The fishing village is in the walking distance and you will be able to see fishermen pulling fishing nets to the shore and catamarans returning. If you are really interested you will be able to take part in pulling nets too.Cycle is one of the best means for explore the villages close by and we are fully equipped to arrange this facility at our campsite in Arugam Bay.
